In Richmond, Virginia, it had been early in the morning last week when members of Engine 20’B B shift responded to a call from the Richmond Police referencing a report from a jogger who heard a dog barking in the storm drain. It was believed the dog was stuck as much as he had been trying to escape and barking for attention.

When the firefighters arrived, they discovered a 40-pound pit bull terrier mixed breed stuck in the mud and water. Only his head stuck out of the water.

One of the firefighter’s descended into the storm drain which was approximately eight feet deep and stood on a piece of metal sticking out of the concrete. Another rescuer passed a rope down through the hole which was then slipped around the dog’s neck. The fireman below pushed the dog up towards safety while the men on the top pulled. The entire rescue call was complete in less than ten minutes. The dog was safe!

Police officers transported the dog to Virginia Veterinary Centers.

The dog, now named Michelangelo by Richmond Animal Care and Control, is fine. They said one would have never known he had been stuck in a storm drain. Michelangelo is now up for adoption. He is approximately two years old and would do best as the only pet in the home. If you are interested in meeting him, contact RACC. He is quite the handsome chap.
