In Riverview, Florida, a litter of eight starving puppies and their mother are now being cared for at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay after they were found on Monday by a construction worker.

According to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, as of Tuesday, all of the dogs had been locked in an old rusty metal cage. There is no way to tell how long the dogs had been left in the heat and the rain, but the construction site had been closed for the weekend and the dogs were not found until Monday morning.

On the organization’s Facebook post, the shelter stated the mother and her one month old puppies were in stable condition, and two of the puppies had to have blood transfusions due to severe anemia.

All of the dogs were emaciated, starving and full of parasites and fleas.

H2 [construction worker] brought them to HSTB, and the medical intake staff began to administer aid. It was immediately apparent the puppies were emaciated, starving, and full of parasites and fleas. Some even had to have emergency blood transfusions due to how anemic they were. We cannot imagine what they have gone through but are grateful they are in our care to be taken care of. Their conditions are unstable, but we are going to do everything in our power to save their lives
