At the Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter in Forked River, New Jersey, two beagles in horrid condition were left abandoned in Waretown near the entrance of the New Jersey State Parkway. The staff and volunteers of the shelter were saddened and infuriated at the same time. One can barely imagine how dedicated these dogs had been to their owners, only to have been neglected and then thrown away as if they were old couches no longer wanted.

On July 6, a motorist spotted the senior male beagle wandering in the woods near the parkway ramp. The police were notified, and an Animal Control Officer had been in the process of picking up the dog at police headquarters when another abandoned beagle was found in the same location and taken to the county shelter. The officer brought both beagles to the AHA/Popcorn Park.

… There are no words. And there are no excuses for the person that allowed these dogs to get in this horrid condition, and then abandon them. If you are infuriated by this, imagine how these dogs feel… It’s gut wrenching and our hearts break for them. The good news is that they’re finally receiving the help that they desperately need.

Meet the two new residents. The male, a senior and in extremely poor health, has been named Brian. He has obviously suffered from years of severe neglect and has dental disease, is emaciated and suffers from a painful case of Demodex mange. Bloodwork revealed he is also anemic and in early renal failure.

Brianne, the female, is younger than Brian, and her condition is also poor, but not nearly as bad as her companion’s health. She has a skin condition, cherry eye, and she’s been neglected overall as evidenced by her filthy coat and overgrown nails.

It is truly amazing how strong and resilient dogs are. Both of these dogs, despite their horrid condition, are wagging their tails non-stop. They are so incredibly happy to get attention and would have you pet them all day if you could. We cannot imagine how someone could have let this happen to these two sweet, loving dogs. They appear to have been hunting dogs, judging by their behavior outdoors.

If you have any information on the person that owned these dogs and then dumped them, please contact us at 609-693-1900 or [email protected].
