Social media users were outraged on Tuesday, after a woman’s son shared his text message conversation online with his mother who admitted she returned the dog they rescued only a month ago back to the shelter.

The heartbreaking conversation was shared on Reddit by Mildly Infuriating who began:

Man I’m actually pissed. My mother got rid of my first pet without warning me.

The post has garnered more than 87,000 votes in one day. The sad exchange between the son and his mom began when he asked his mother where Chase (the dog) was when he returned home. The mother told her son that she had taken the dog back to the shelter, and she never really liked dogs in the first place.

Check out the text message exchange:

The son was extremely heartbroken and told his mom had he known she was going to return Chase to the shelter, he could have at least spent one more day with the pooch. Her answer – “oh well”!

Most people who responded were as sad as the young man who posted the conversation. There were lots of suggestions including someone suggesting the son go to the shelter and reclaim the dog after explaining what happened.

The latest update did include the son stating he would try to get the dog back from the shelter once he turns 18. (We don’t know how long that will be), but as you can see by the dog’s photo, the young man was correct:

He’s too cute though, no way somebody [not] going to snatch that boy.

Please think carefully before you adopt a pet from a shelter. Are you able to care for your new best friend physically and mentally? Are you able to afford a vet – annual physical, preventive medications for fleas and heartworms, yearly vaccinations? Are you able to spend time with your pet? Remember – you go to work, to school, meet your friends and have fun, while your dog waits for you, and you are his/her entire life.

Be kind – one of the most depressing parts of returning a pet to a shelter is that much too often they are the first to be euthanized. There are so many wonderful years and experiences to have with a pet – please make sure you’re ready for the responsibility.

  1. What a POS mother…… with a witch like her, who needs enemies???

If she were my Mom, I am moving in with Dad!!! Either that or get my own house, retrieve my dog from the shelter, and then permanently cut off all contacts with my Mom……..
