In Cocoa, Florida, a pet sitter who worked for Rover.com, was arrested after a dog in her care died from heatstroke. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office arrested Heather Chambers, 33, on October 14 and charged her with felony animal cruelty.

According to Click Orlando, Chambers had been caring for two dogs in her home while the owners had been away. That afternoon, she notified the family that one of the dogs had been outside and died. The family wanted to know if their dog, Rolo had been left outside for an extended period of time, because the dog, a brachycephalic, [a flat faced dog] was not to be left outdoors for more than a short, supervised walk.

When the family returned to pick up Rolo’s remains, they saw the dog had been covered in dirt, and the sitter had been given strict orders the dog was not to be left outside anywhere near long enough to get dirty. A necropsy showed Rolo died from heatstroke.

During an interview with authorities, Chambers admitted she had not seen Rolo for up to six hours, and claimed he was dirty because she had been “tossing him back and forth on the ground in the yard, as she tried to raise a response from him.” Chambers told deputies that it was possible her children had left the sliding door open, and the dog went outdoors.

Chambers’ boyfriend later told deputies the dog had been outdoors for hours.

Chambers is currently free on a $2,000 bond.

Rest in peace Rolo.
