Days ago, a dog was saved from the muddy shoreline of the Choctawhatchee River. The pup was spotted by a kayaker who could see him, but was unable to remove him. The Troy Animal Rescue Project recounted the situation, writing:

Last night, our director was tagged in a Facebook post about a dog who couldn’t walk that had been seen on the banks of the Choctawhatchee River. The dog was seen by a kayaker who could not get him out and the area was only accessible by boat. At 1 am, a plan came together and our director, Aimee Cobb Smith and Eric Alphord met at a boat dock in Hartford, AL and set out to find the poor pup.

Eric Alphord was able to maneuver a boat through downed trees and dense fog to access the weary dog, who was so weak that he could no longer raise his head. It was a lengthy drive to an emergency veterinary clinic, but the dog showed his will to live and survived the journey. The animal welfare agency shared his dismal condition, writing:

We have named this sweet boy River and he is currently receiving treatment at Carriage Hills Animal Hospital. Poor guy tested positive for parvo. He was also hypothermic from being in the water and thick mud. His oxygen levels were 50 when he got there. His glucose level is continuing to bottom out and he is on the highest level dosage they can give. But he is fighting hard to go home and they are doing everything they can for him.

On Thursday, the rescue group shared a promising update, writing:

We are really excited tonight, as River is moving around and actually drank water. Unfortunately, he puked it all back up because he is still having motility issues due to the parvo but thankful he is showing interest in normal things. We were worried about his neuro status, as he had very low oxygen and hypothermia. But it seems to be clearing with time. Tonight, he did move toward me and curled up in his blanket right beside me so I think he does recognize a familiar face. Please keep those prayers and good thoughts coming for this sweet boy.

River isn’t out of the woods, but he is hanging in there. If you want to follow his journey, or make a donation, you can find the Troy Animal Rescue Project on Facebook here.
