The owners of a lost 150-pound African Sulcata tortoise had lots of help finding their pet that escaped from the family’s backyard after a storm blew the gate open. On June 19, Cindy Iverson couldn’t find 12-year-old Elliot, and she was just heartbroken.
In a panic, Iverson contacted all of her neighbors; a 150-pound tortoise was more than likely seen by someone in the area.
And almost immediately, according to People, a neighbor responded that a girl delivering Door Dash had spotted a tortoise the preceding evening and contacted her asking if anyone had been missing a tortoise. The driver helped the tortoise get untangled from a ditch, and she said she would keep an eye out for Elliot.
Iverson also posted on NextDoor and the Arizona Tortoise Lost and Found Facebook page about Elliot’s escape. Hundreds of people in the area responded, helped the family put up posters with Elliot’s picture and even searched for him by horseback.
By the next day, someone found the elusive tortoise after he became caught up in the fence of a horse farm. Elliot was in an area inaccessible by car, and the family had planned to use a wagon to bring him home, but it seems that Elliot wanted no parts of being hauled in a wagon. Instead he eagerly followed his family to the road where they hoisted the tortoise into their vehicle for a sweet reunion at home.
No kidding – good deeds like this from our neighbors and friends definitely renew our confidence in the goodness of people.
