The New York City Sheriff’s Office worked with the Staten Island District Attorney and the ASPCA on an investigation leading to the rescue of two dozen puppies and dogs in Staten Island on Friday after receiving complaints about animal cruelty.

According to AbcNews, the dogs were being held in a fenced-in area. A search warrant involved entering a gate on the 100 block of Van Duzer Street where two dozen Husky dogs were being kept. On arrival, authorities discovered one deceased puppy and one critically injured dog that was immediately transported to an emergency veterinarian.

The dogs were overjoyed to see the deputies and rescuers. Many of the dogs had been trapped inside of trailers where they were covered with urine and feces. Under one of the trailers, a mother dog had been hiding her newborn puppies; one of the puppies had died. The dogs only had drinking water filled with maggots and a kiddie pool filled with green murky water.

At the urgent request of the New York City Sheriff’s Office and Richmond County District Attorney’s Office, the ASPCA assisted with the removal of nearly 25 dogs and puppies including one deceased puppy from a property on Staten Island in connection with an ongoing animal-cruelty investigation. The dogs were discovered living in filthy conditions that lacked proper ventilation and smelled strongly of feces and urine. Some dogs were exhibiting signs of skin injuries, and all of the dogs had no access to fresh water. The animals were transferred to the ASPCA’s care, where they will receive veterinary forensic exams, medical care nd behavioral treatment and enrichment.
