Ryan Mitchell Smith, a suspect who was released from jail after his family put up bond over the weekend, had been charged with stabbing Houston K-9 Officer Nate. After police discovered the body of Smith’s father early Tuesday morning in the garage at his home, Smith was being sought as a person of interest.

According to Houston Police and AbcNews, Smith had been arrested on Saturday for allegedly taking part in an attempted carjacking and stabbing K-9 Officer Nate during the arrest.

Nate, a Belgian Malinois who serves as a SWAT officer canine, had been on duty with his handler when officers responded to the robbery attempt. As the suspect tried to escape, Nate was released and chased Smith on foot. Smith, alleged to have been armed with a butcher knife, stabbed Nate several times while behind the building, located on the 1600 block of Bass Street.

Officers heard the dog let out a cry, and his handler ran over, picked him up and rushed him to the animal hospital Vergi24, where the dog received life saving treatment for his injuries and loss of blood. Nate underwent surgery, and he is recovering and has returned home to recuperate.
