A sweet cat has been credited with saving her owner’s life by using her paws to wake up her owner while the woman was having a heart attack. Sam Felstead from Stapleford, Nottingham said she had been asleep when seven-year-old feline Billy woke her up at 4:30 a.m.

According to BBCNews, Felstead, 42, woke up after Billy pounded her paws on the woman’s chest and meowed in her ear until she woke up realizing she was in severe pain. Felstead could not move and had a shooting pain down her right side.

After the ambulance was called and the woman rushed to Nottingham City Hospital, physicians told Sam she had just had a heart attack in her sleep and had she not been awakened by Billy, the woman could have died. One of her arteries had been blocked which had caused the heart attack.

Felstead is convinced Billy was her hero. It’s never been like the cat to wake her in the night, and he’s always been aloof and not particularly social,

Three days later, Felstead returned home, and Billy seemed to be back to his old rather independent self.

I’m grateful towards him as I didn’t know if I’d have woken up – my alarm wasn’t for another two hours so who knows if I would have woken up. The doctors said it was a good job I got to hospital in time. I do think he saved my life and so does everybody else around me.

As to the reason Billy reacted as he did remains a mystery, but it is possible the cat picked up on the physiological changes in his owner and may have jumped on her and started meowing out of his anxiety.

Animal behaviorists aren’t saying Billy really saved the life of his owner, although let’s face it – none of us can figure out what special senses of our companion animals kick in at times of great stress and emergencies. We read about dogs saving babies, cats saving their owners from burning homes by meowing, so who knows, but his owner is certainly a believer.

Good job Billy.
