In San Diego, a father who entered an elephant’s enclosure with his two-year-old daughter at the San Diego Zoo for photos, was sentenced to four years of probation on Friday.
According to the News & Observer, Jose Manuel Navarrete was arrested in March 2021 after zoo officials told authorities Navarrete had bypassed a number of safety barriers to “purposely and illegally trespass” into the habitat of Asian and African elephants. As the man got closer and closer to the elephants enclosure, a woman could be heard yelling for the father to stop, but instead the man jumped the fence and entered the elephants enclosure carrying his toddler.
Check out the video shared on Twitter by CBS8 San Diego:
The video posted on Twitter showed Navarrete running from the enclosure after he spotted the elephant running and charging towards him and his child. As he climbed to safety, he dropped the child and quickly turned around to grab her. He was charged with child endangerment and pleaded guilty to the charge.
Judge Rachel Cano warned Navarrete to comply with all the terms of his probation and emphasized how he endangered his child’s life.
