Luigi is home; the black Labrador retriever mix went missing on June 25 in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness after becoming separated from his owners.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the dog named Luigi went missing shortly after his family and friends arrived at the area for a ten day trip. Luigi’s owners, Zane Brunette and Max McKeman spent hours searching for the dog and camped in the same spot for days cooking with “greasy pans” to attract the dog’s attention. When they had no luck, they created social media posts and flyers hoping someone had spotted their dog.

It was just one month later, when a woman found Luigi near her family cabin which was more than 30 miles from where he disappeared. The Good Samaritan called the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, and the dispatcher remembered the missing dog report and put the woman in contact with the dog’s owners. The reunion was heartwarming as Luigi jumped for joy at the sight of Brunette.

It is not known how Luigi survived 29 days in the wilderness, however he did lose 25 pounds and broke several toenails. Besides that, Luigi isn’t talking, but he is one very lucky pooch and is expected to make a full recovery.
