A zoo director in northern Germany has stated some animals will be slaughtered soon in order to feed other animals because of the lack of funds amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The announcement comes a month after the nation’s animal sanctuaries asked Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, for 100 million euros to help care for their animal residents
According to Welt, Verena Kaspari, director of the Neumunster Zoo said, “We’ve listed the animals we’ll have to slaughter first.” Kaspari did say it would be a last resort, but some of the animals living at the zoo have large appetites. Seals and penguins need bucket loads of fish daily to survive.
“If it comes to it, I’ll have to euthanize animals rather than let them starve,” Kaspari admitted. “At the worst, we would have to feed some the animals to others.”
The zoo has suffered a significant loss of revenue since being closed to the public. It is estimated they will have lost $200,000 by this spring. The Association of Zoological Gardens agrees that zoos are not able to cut their expenses during this lock down as the animals still have to be fed.
At the Berlin Zoo are panda twins – an attraction that would attract major attention in normal times. Some zoos have been using virtual videos of the animals, but this does remind us many of the animals enjoy the socialization experiences they have with visitors.
