Man who punched police horse sentenced to prison

In Portsmouth located in the United Kingdom, a man was sent to prison for 20 months after he punched a police horse before a football match.

According to Emergency Service News, Derek Jennings, 53, pleaded guilty after having been charged with violent disorder, contrary to Section 2(1) and (5) of the Public Order Act of 1986.

The disturbing incident occurred in September, 2019,  as police officers were keeping control of crowds during a match between Portsmouth Football Club and Southampton Football Club. One patrol officer spotted Jennings becoming aggressive towards officers and the rival team’s fans. As the officer headed towards Jennings riding his police horse, Luna, Jennings clenched his fist and punched the horse in her nose and mouth.

The horse shied away from her attacker, but not before Jennings hit her again two more times and then fled. Jennings was soon apprehended and arrested.

In court on July 31, the judge hoped the sentence given to Jennings will be a warning to people that the man’s behavior was inexcusable to both other people and to Luna.

Fortunately Luna was not hurt and was able to remain on duty although she did receive extra treats when taken back to the police stables.
