In Dubbo, Australia, a 19-year-old teen faces animal cruelty charges after a viral video showed him plucking the feathers, riding and dragging an emu as bystanders laughed. On Wednesday, the yet to be publicly identified teen, was charged with “recklessly beating an animal to cause prolonged suffering.”
According to AbcNews, the video showed an emu apparently trapped in a fence being dragged, ridden and plucked of his feathers seen lying around the frightened animal. Two bystanders, including the person videoing the disturbing event, could be heard laughing.
The video originally appeared on Snapchat, but was quickly uploaded to Facebook. It is not known if the emu survived, and authorities have yet to find the exact spot where the cruelty occurred, although police stated it likely occurred in Quambone.
The Rural Crime Prevention Team, a part of the Orana Mid-Western Police District in South Wales, investigated and thanked the public for their help leading to the arrest. The two bystanders are not expected to be charged. The defendant is scheduled to appear in court in July.
