In Missoula, Montana, a family is grieving  the death of their young dog who was killed near the Clark Fork River in the Orchard Homes area late last week. Rachel Luger and Bryan Dalphes posted the story on their Facebook page, describing the devastating loss of their 17-month-old dog, Betsy as she was caught in an illegal conibear trap while the family had been out for their evening walk.

The illegal trap had been set near the family’s routine walking path – where they would go several times a week. Betsy had been slightly behind them when they heard a noise and what sounded like an animal fighting. They ran back – only to see Betsy caught by the neck in the trap.

Dalphes was able to remove the trap, however the damage to the dog’s airway would prove to be fatal. All the way to the vet’s office, the couple performed CPR, but the damage was too severe, and Betsy did not survive.

Two men have been charged for failure to appropriately mark the trap and for an illegal ground set. The men were also charged with illegally trapping within city limits. Jaymz Antonio Partida, Sr. 45, and Michael Bruno, 35, were cited by city and state authorities.

According to the Missoulian, wardens found four illegal traps: three foothold traps and one conibear trap. None were tagged as required by state law and the conibear trap had not been recessed properly.  Fish, Wildlife and Parks cited Partida with failing to recess a 330 conibear trap and setting traps without tags.

If found guilty on all charges, Partida would have to forfeit his trapping license and lose trapping privileges. He could also face a fine up to $1,500 and a six-month jail sentence. For the city code violations, the men would be fine $50 for their first offense.  (That doesn’t seem to be justice for a family’s dog.)

More information about trapping can be found at FWP’s website ; the Western Montana Humane Society will host a class in January about being aware of traps.

Rest in peace Betsy.

  1. What a devastating ordeal this family went through. There is NO punishment harsh enough for these illegal trappers. The whole thing makes me sick! I hope and pray this family is able to get some justice for their loss.

  2. HOW ABOUT A MAJOR LAWSUIT?! I AM POSITIVE PEOPLE WOULD DONATE TO HELP PAY FOR LEGAL EXPENSES! IN ANY CASE, FIRST THERE WILL BE “KARMA” AND THEN, MOST LIKELY, A VERY HOT AND FIERY PLACE!
