UPDATE: Puppy’s incredible will to survive after being struck by train

0
Spread the love

Less than a week ago, Hounds In Pounds Inc, a rescue based in Allendale, New Jersey, facilitated a major emergency rescue for a three-month-old puppy named Baby Koko after he suffered severe injuries.

An Atlanta public shelter partner reached out to the rescue after the injured puppy had been hit by a train. His owner, a homeless man who loved his puppy, cried desperately for help – begging anyone there to save the life of his dog.

A Good Samaritan stopped to help and called animal services, reporting the puppy was still alive, but in critical condition. Whether he could even survive was not known, but even a chance with the smallest flicker, Hounds In Pounds, Inc. needed to give him a chance, because that is what they do.

His injuries were critical; his leg was mangled and most of his tail had been severed and lost. Both required amputation. He was also anemic and required blood transfusions in order to help stabilize him for surgery.

Two days later, Koko underwent successful surgery.

AND NOW …

Look at Baby Koko. This beautiful puppy who had been struck by a train is finding his way.

chose life anyway — is popping up like a tiny jack‑in‑the‑box, determined to navigate this brand‑new world on his own terms.

This is the same puppy no one thought would make it through the first night at the emergency hospital. Koko, however had other plans. It’s so rewarding to know this brave puppy had other plans, and that Hounds In Pounds gave him the choice.

Today, he is learning to walk all over again, and he is doing incredibly well.

His spirit is loud! His will is stronger than his wounds. His sweetness? Untouched.

He continues his cold laser treatments to help him heal without pain. He gets strict cage rest to protect his fragile little body. And he receives endless snuggles, because if Baby Koko has taught us anything, it’s that love is medicine too.

He’s not just healing —

He’s winning!

And one day soon, this tiny survivor will be running — really running — the way puppies are meant to. He is too cute, too brave, too miraculous not to smile at. And his story is far from over.

Read Baby Koko’s previous coverage.

Baby Koko needs you now more than ever.

Swept in confiscation case with 34 other dogs Wolf Gang tries to make sense of shelter chaos before time is up

0
Spread the love

Somewhere in the chaos was Wolf Gang; only a year old when animal control officers from San Bernardino, California, confiscated 35 dogs. Thirty-five lives changed in a single day. Thirty-five dogs were removed from everything they had known and forced into shelter life with strangers, loud noises and turmoil.

Wolf Gang is little more than a puppy. Aren’t puppies supposed to be playing in the grass, chewing on sticks and learning to be social and beloved companions to the children and adults who care for them at this more than adorable age?

Instead, this puppy is sitting in a shelter kennel.

And now he waits. Shelter notes indicate he is scheduled to be humanely euthanized soon. Although there are few notes about Wolf Gang’s behavior and socialization, he can only be saved by an approved animal rescue organization. (reported on notes as “fearful”)

According to volunteers who have met him, however state he is friendly with other dogs, kind and easygoing. No doubt, Wolf Gang should be looking forward to a full life – not a few days.

And sadly in the overcrowded conditions of the Devore Animal Shelter in San Bernardino, California, being young and gorgeous doesn’t protect him from becoming a statistic from the lonely backroom where the break of day is no longer celebrated.

It’s heartbreaking to think that a dog who has barely begun living could lose the chance to truly live at all.

He doesn’t need perfection. He doesn’t need someone with all the answers.

He just needs someone to see him.

Someone to say, “That one. I’m not leaving him behind.”

Senior pup surrounded by chaos in busy shelter ‘just short of giving up’

When Stephanie, a shelter volunteer, arrived to meet Statler, on Monday at the Fulton County Animal Services in Atlanta, Georgia, all she had been given was the dog’s name. Sadly, her stomach dropped as she peeked into the kennel and met the 10-year-old senior.

The look in his eyes appeared to signal how he was “just short of giving up.” Surrounded by the loud noises of the shelter, and lying in his kennel in such poor condition, Statler could be older than 10 or maybe it was a reflection on a past hard life.

As Stephanie opened Statler’s kennel, he slowly rose to his feet, and together they walked outside. He did his bathroom necessities quickly; perhaps he is housetrained? In the yard he stayed close, but not enough to want to be petted, but near enough to feel the closeness of a kind human.

I truly believe he wants to trust, but I don’t think humans have been kind to him. He loved treats, a good sign that he’s still eating even with being so sick. He has a chance, there’s still some fight left in him but I can tell it’s fading….

Statler arrived at the shelter with another dog early in May 2026, and for a time they found comfort with each other. Eventually that closeness became too much for Statler.

Please come meet this sweet senior named Statler at Fulton County Animal Services. He can be fostered or adopted, and he desperately needs out before he gives up.

Statler’s adoption information:

One-pound puppy abandoned in bucket at shelter door gets second chance

0
Spread the love

Over the weekend, what could only be described as truly heartbreaking, someone abandoned a one-pound puppy in a bucket at the door of a Dallas shelter hours before it opened.

Estimated to be no more than a few weeks of age, the puppy now named Checkers had been covered in wounds, dehydrated, infected with fleas and suffering from maggots in his wounds and his nose. He also tested positive for hookworms, leaving his tiny body fighting to survive.

Dallas Dog -Rescue.Rehab.Reform stepped in immediately offering to help Checkers. Since arriving at the emergency veterinarian hospital, Checkers has been receiving antibiotics, deworming treatment, fluids, wound care and supportive medical treatment. Despite everything he has endured, this little guy continues to fight.

He has been responding to treatment, and he is being prepared to begin the next phase of his recovery in a foster home rather than a hospital kennel.

We’re hopeful that Checkers may be able to leave the hospital and head to a foster home today.

Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared, and supported Checkers. Because of you, a puppy who was abandoned in a bucket is getting a chance to heal, grow, and know what love feels like.

In a tragic situation on Sunday night, K-9 Knight, a five-year-old German shepherd/Malinois blend, with the Chesterfield County Police Department in Virginia, was shot and later died in the line of duty.

In the late afternoon of May 31, officers responded to a domestic disturbance. Authorities stated the incident began when the suspect and his mother became violent during a domestic dispute. The suspect was armed with a long gun, fired shots toward his mother and tried to enter the room she was in.

When two officers and K-9 Knight arrived, the suspect opened fire with a long gun, striking K-9 Knight and two officers.

Knight died as a result of his injuries. The condition of the two human officers has since been updated from critical to stable condition. K-9 Knight sacrificed his own life to save his fellow officers.

Knight served with his handler, Corporal John Walsh, for four years and was described by the department as a heroic, loyal partner.

Today, a K-9 patrol vehicle has been placed in front of the Chesterfield County Police Department (CCPD) building on Ironbridge Road for community members to leave flowers and to honor Knight.

Today, we honor and remember K-9 Knight. Throughout his career, Knight assisted in many police operations and consistently helped officers carry out their missions and return home safely.

  • Knight’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the officers he served beside and the community he helped protect.
  • Knight is survived by his handler, Cpl. John Walsh, his family, and the many members of the department who were fortunate enough to know and work alongside him.
  • Thank you for your service, Knight. We will never forget your sacrifice.
  • End of Watch: May 31, 2026

The suspect involved in the shooting faces multiple felony charges. Police have not released the name of the suspect involved in the shooting, but said the suspect faces nine pending charges.

Three-year-old toddler playing with family dog disappeared ‘into thin air’ found together 1.4 miles away

In Allegany, New York, it had been every parents’ worst nightmare when their three-year-old toddler went missing from their home located close to County Route 22.

On May 8, the child had been playing outside with the family dog about 7:00 p.m. The child’s mother told first responders that the 3-year-old was playing with the dog outside when suddenly she “couldn’t see them anymore.”

A massive search for the child and the dog was launched which included the New York State Police and the Allegany County Drone Team as well as forest rangers and local firefighters.

New York State Police and the Allegany County Drone Team joined the search for the missing 3-year-old and family dog.

While the search had been underway for nearly two hours, a neighbor driving along Hawks Road spotted the child and the dog together in a field at the edge of the road. The two were 1.4 miles away from home. Emergency personnel were dispatched, and the toddler was medically checked at the scene.

Both the child and the dog were confirmed unharmed and were reunited with their family.

Disturbing video of dog chained to back of pickup truck sparks urgent efforts to find him loving home

A surrendered dog named West has been recovering in the medical department at the North Central Shelter in Los Angeles. His story is truly heartbreaking, but he is expected to be available for adoption shortly, and there could be nothing more pleasing to animal advocates than to watch West being walked out of the shelter by a new family.

West’s unsettling journey went viral on May 19 when a motorist spotted the dog chained to the rack of a moving pickup truck on the 5 Freeway in Lincoln Heights in Southern California. His owner later stated he had been driving West to the shelter to surrender the dog.

The disturbing video had originally been posted online by a Redditt user. Advocates hurried to track down the location of the truck and were determined to help West. When he arrived at the shelter, he had at least six cuts around his neck. It is believed the chain he wore caused the injuries.

The owner’s name has not been made public, and an investigation into animal cruelty charges remain under investigation.

West (ID# A2272917) was in the medical department at the North Central Shelter in Los Angeles and was expected to be available for adoption shortly. Because he was listed in the medical department rather than the general adoption floor, please call the shelter directly to check his status before visiting.

Now it’s time to share West’s story. The shelter is overcrowded, and dogs that are very adoptable often fall between the cracks and never make it out alive.

Puppy’s will to survive unmistakable in greatest fight for his life after critically injured when struck by train

0
Spread the love

Hounds In Pounds Inc, a rescue based in Allendale, New Jersey, facilitated a major emergency rescue on Friday, for a three-month-old puppy named Baby Koko, after he suffered severe injuries.

Yesterday, an Atlanta public shelter partner reached out to the rescue after the severely injured puppy had been hit by a train. His owner, a homeless man who loved his puppy cried desperately for help – begging anyone there to save the life of his dog.

Someone finally stopped and called animal services, reporting the puppy was still alive, but in critical condition. The puppy whimpered softly; he didn’t understand why his tiny body hurt so badly.

Baby Koko is only 3 months old — a precious brindle boy with the sweetest face and the most innocent eyes.

The puppy needed immediate and aggressive trauma intervention. Whether he could even survive was not known, but even a chance with the smallest flicker, Hounds In Pounds, Inc. needed to give him a chance, because that is what they do.

The shelter knew the puppy would not have survived the night. The images presented were extremely graphic; his leg was mangled and most of his tail had been severed and lost. Both required amputation if the puppy had any chances of survival. He was also very anemic and required blood transfusions in order to help stabilize him for surgery.

Baby Koko was in shock, but even when hands reached for him, he didn’t snap or try to resist. He knew he was being helped – even at such a young age.

His condition is grave, but his will to survive has been unmistakable.

Even now, he is choosing to stay with us.

He is choosing life.

He is incredibly sweet.

He still believes in love.

And now, one day later, Koko’s update shows this little guy’s incredible spirit to see tomorrow. His surgery was a success, and Dr. Terry and her team graciously made him a priority from the moment he arrived. His leg and tail were amputated, and in spite of everything this little guy has had to endure, he survived the operation and fought all the way.

Today, we finally have a breath of relief to share —

Koko is still receiving blood, along with a cocktail of pain medication and antibiotics to keep him comfortable and stable.

Many thanks to the little dog named Rally who provided Baby Koko the blood he needed to stay alive. Yes, he was a bit surprised, but it’s all fine!

Cold laser therapy begins today, and he is surrounded by techs who haven’t stopped kissing his face, whispering to him and making sure he feels safe and loved.

He is warm.

He is held.

He is fighting.

And he is still here — because of all of you.

His recovery is fragile, and every update matters.

Baby Koko needs you now more than ever.

Good Samaritan spotted severely undernourished puppy transferred to St. Louis rescue for life saving surgery

0
Spread the love

A six-month-old puppy arrived at Stray Rescue of St. Louis on Thursday roaming the streets alone, after he was found by a Good Samaritan. The puppy was heartbreakingly skinny and very sick; even if he found some scraps to eat, the food wouldn’t stay down. His condition was alarming.

He couldn’t eat, he was very sick, and his too-skinny body made our hearts ache.

Upon his arrival at the veterinary hospital, doctors saw intussusception on his radiographs; a condition in which one segment of the intestine slides into an adjacent section similar to a collapsible telescope causing a bowel obstruction blocking food, fluid and blood flow.

He was named Melvin, and on Friday, he underwent surgery in order to perform an exploratory laparotomy and repair the injured section of his intestines. He did great!

The video posted by the clinic showed Melvin walk around, and his first stop seemed to be at Dr. Otiz’ desk to thank him for saving his life. And just to remind us how quickly dogs can fight the good fight, Melvin’s second, third and fourth stops were in search of food.

Because he’s dangerously skinny, he is on a refeeding schedule, so he can only have small amounts of food, several times a day. Food has to be reintroduced forward so as not to shock his system. Every day his food intake is increased slowly until he is back on a normal diet and can start to gain weight.

Check this out:

We’ll keep everyone posted. To donate to Melvin’s surgery, click here (and thank you so much):

Fire rescuers bring pup stranded on top of pillar underneath bridge to safety

The Dallas Fire-Rescue team were the heroes to a frightened, stray dog spotted perched on a narrow, high pillar underneath a bridge on Topeka Avenue. When animal control officers arrived, they were very concerned for the dog’s safety, but knew immediately her rescue required specialized equipment and expertise.

It had been on May 23, when the Dallas Fire-Rescue had been called to the scene.

While the dog did not appear to be in distress, the location was extremely difficult to access. Using a ladder truck and plenty of teamwork, Dallas Fire-Rescue safely brought the sweet pup down to safety. Thankfully, she was not injured.

The dog was later named Trinity.

We would all like to send a huge shoutout to the amazing responders who made this rescue possible.

Trinity is now safe at Dallas Animal Services and will be available for adoption on 5/27! You can still submit an adoption application now at bedallas90.org.
