Less than a week ago, in McPherson, Kansas, six newborn puppies had been abandoned in a Walmart parking lot. The puppies had been crowded into a pink bag which had been placed behind the tire of a parked vehicle.

Their eyes were still closed. They were squirming around and squeaking, crying. And all six of them were doing it. So that was a good thing.
Out of compassion and love for these innocent little ones, the McPherson Police Department and animal control officers from the McPherson Animal Shelter, had been providing the puppies with their immediate care. Staff members from the shelter, police officers and even jail staff stepped in to bottle-feed and comfort them every two hours.
Fortunately, officers who launched an immediate investigation were able to reunite the puppies with their mom.
As officers reviewed surveillance footage from the parking lot, the investigation led them to a person of interest. The unidentified man allowed authorities to take the mother of the puppies to the McPherson Animal Shelter, and on Thursday, an emotional reunion showing a mother’s love for her babies and vice-versa played out in front of smiling rescuers and supporters.
The puppies recognized their mother immediately, and quickly positioned themselves to nurse while their mother tenderly settled in beside them. She wrapped herself around her puppies and offered them the warmth and security they had been missing, despite the best of intentions and efforts from their rescuers.
Immediately the puppies latched on and momma lay down to snuggle them. I’m not crying, you’re crying!
The shelter plans to keep the mother dog with her puppies until the little ones are ready to be adopted. In the meantime, the mom will be receiving her vaccinations and when she stops nursing, will be spayed.
An investigation about the puppies, and why they were abandoned continues. Potential charges have been forwarded to the city prosecutors. The owner may face animal cruelty charges.
