In McPherson, Kansas, six puppies barely one-week-old had been abandoned just days ago, in a Walmart parking lot. The puppies had been crowded into a pink bag which was placed behind the tire of a parked vehicle.

The McPherson Police Department and animal control officers from the McPherson Animal Shelter, responded last week to the report of the puppies and have been providing their immediate care. Staff members from the shelter, police officers and even jail staff have stepped in to bottle-feed and comfort them every three hours.

Anyone who would like to donate bottles and formula or other supplies for the puppies may do so at the animal shelter located at 1115 West Woodside.
On Tuesday, the shelter posted a memo to update the plight ofthe puppies as well as to express gratitude to everyone stepping up and providing help and donations. By law, the puppies are considered to be on stray hold and can not be sent off to foster placement or adoption. Also, they cannot be adopted until they are at least eight weeks of age.
Once they are of appropriate age and become available foradoption, they will be publicly posted through the shelter.
Our staff continues to work through this situation day by day, andwe would also like to extend our gratitude to our county and city departments for their immediate willingness to assist with the puppies’ around-the-clock care.
Authorities are now searching for whomever left the puppies behind and are asking the community to come forward with any information. The McPherson Police Department is reviewing surveillance video to identify suspects, with potential charges including animal abandonment and endangerment.
Anyone with information is urged to contact McPherson County Crimestoppers at 620-241-1122, the Police Department at 620-245-1200, or the Animal Shelter at 620-245-2583.
