In Foster, Rhode Island, a popular 21-year-old senior dachshund quietly passed away over the weekend at Vintage Pet Rescue. Sprout had spent the last nine months of his life at the rescue being pampered and loved by the staff and volunteers.

In a social media post Sunday morning, the heartbreaking statement brought tears through the celebration of a long life:
We are going to miss this sweet boy terribly, and we have all shed a lot of tears. But, we are so incredibly happy that he was part of our lives, and we will never forget him. Thank you for loving Sprout with us and we hope he continues to bring you joy
Nearly a year ago, Sprout’s elderly owner died, and the dog had been left at an animal shelter in Providence. At the time, rescuers only thought he would live for a few weeks, and they were all planning to spoil the senior as much as possible. Sprout, however had no plans to leave this life, and at the rescue he began to gain weight and muscle. His coat grew thicker, and he became more active.

Because Sprout’s life was so unusual and special, he became the ambassador for the rescue organization and garnered followers from all over the world.

While in our care Sprout got to celebrate so much. He was in numerous viral reels, he was voted in as union president, he got his own merchandise, he got his own calendar, he celebrated his 21st birthday with all his friends, and he received Congressional recognition. Sprout’s story was shared on We Rate Dogs, What’s Going on RI, and WPRI12. He made so many people happy during a difficult time. Incredible. And he did all of this while still enjoying second dinner.
Sprout had quite a fan club in Rhode Island including many local veterinary practices.

Rest in peace Sprout. If only more of our beloved dogs could live as long as you did.
