At the Washington State Benton-Franklin Humane Society, a man walked in, just a few weeks ago, pulling a golden retriever puppy next to him with a rope. The man told shelter workers he wanted to surrender the five-month-old puppy, telling the staff he only had the puppy for three days and acted as if he didn’t want to be bothered. In that time, the man had not even given the pup a name.

The man had not offered any background information about the puppy, but the little guy was smelly and scared. He was nervously checking out his new environment. For sure, he had no idea where he was or what was to happen. The loud noises, the new faces and the strange place – all the ingredients to scare any dog, much less a puppy so young.

Rescue volunteer Julie Saraceno, named him Waffles after his yellow coat.
First right of passage at the shelter was a warm bath. He loved it and within minutes gently relaxed.

After he was dried and brushed, Julie accompanied Waffles to his kennel; she sat on the floor next to him and helped him adjust. She gently stroked him while he relaxed and fell asleep.

Within days of his arrival at the shelter, his video went viral. Multiple offers for adoption followed, and after he was neutered, Waffles was ready to begin his new life with a family who really wanted him.

Julie had no doubt Waffles would be offered a home quickly, but she wanted people to be aware that even the most beautiful, purebred and perfectly behaved pets sometimes arrive at shelters across the country.

The puppy’s videos on Instagram and TikTok went viral quickly, and on March 13, Waffles went home.
