At the Fulton County Animal Services in Atlanta, Georgia, senior dogs Tia and Tamera had each other. They arrived at the shelter as strays, but according to volunteers, even when the two sisters were being processed as new arrivals, they happily wagged their tails.
Their bond was heartwarming:

Tia (brindle) would eat up all the treats. It was like they had an agreement – Tia would get the treats, and Tamera would take the bed. It seemed like they had a good thing going and were pretty content with shelter life. They shared a single kennel usually meant for just one big dog. How scary could the shelter be anyways, as long as you have your sister!
Unfortunately, Tamera will now find out. On Monday morning, Tia passed away; she had been in the care of veterinarians at the shelter after having experienced a medical complication.

It had been hoped the sisters would be placed together in a loving retirement home, but now Tamera has to make it on her own.

No longer will Tamera her her shadow, her best friend who she pressed together with in their kennel.

Earlier this afternoon shelter volunteer, Mervé Gurses visited Tamera. Today Tamera seemed lost. She hesitated to come out of her kennel, and when she was finally coaxed to come out, “she pressed her whole body against me; leaning, holding on, needing closeness the way she used to lean on her sister.”
This is no where for Tamera to be. The shelter is noisy; it’s cold and overwhelming. This is the time Tamera needs comfort; this is the time she needs someone to lean on while she grieves the loss of Tia. This is the time she needs a kind person who can reassure her that all is not lost.
She’s grieving. And she is trying so hard to understand a world that feels unfamiliar without her other half.
Tamera would do best in a quiet home where she receives lots of love and support. Please come and meet her at Fulton County Animal Services.

Tamera is estimated to be about seven years old. She weighs 44 pounds. She has not been tested for heartworms. Both dogs arrived as strays, so there are no home notes. She’s available for foster, adoption, or rescue.
(Many thanks to Mervé Gurses for sharing Tamera’s plight on social media. We appreciate all the help these dogs can get helping them find homes. Sharing saves lives. Please continue to share Tamera’s story with friends, family and social media contacts.
