In St. Louis, Missouri, neighbors had been feeding a pregnant dog near a row of abandoned homes, but the freezing temperatures and recent snowfall seemed to have made the dog disappear. Good Samaritans worried about the dog’s welfare and notified Stray Rescue of St. Louis for help.

With a rescue team led by Donna Lochmann, volunteers entered the first home which luckily turned to relief when they spotted the mother dog hiding under a piece of furniture in the corner. She looked frightened and extremely cautious; after all she had a litter of puppies she needed to protect.

In the last few days, St. Louis has been hit with inches of snow, sleet, ice and dangerous temperatures. We assumed she had her babies in one of the nearby abandoned houses and began our search.
She growled; her five puppies were her priority. Donna was not deterred:

Mama was sooo good protecting her little ones. She loves people but was unsure of our intentions..
A slip lead was tied around her neck – later dubbed Jackie Frost, she was led to the awaiting warm Jeep and soon reunited with her puppies estimated to have been little more than one week old. By the same evening, Jackie had settled comfortably into the cozy bed back at the shelter with her puppies; quite anxious to show them off to the rescuers and soak up some well-deserved attention, treats and scratches.

Later Lochmann returned to the same abandoned house and found the puppies’ father. He is now in a foster home as are Jackie and her puppies.
