A black bear showed up at a home in Tuscumbia, Alabama about a week ago and made himself at home. First he started nibbling on the tomatoes, and then he lumbered over to the pear tree and climbed up with the intention of knocking the pears off the branches onto the ground.

And then he would climb down the tree, comfortably lie down in the shade and dine on the pears. Then he would do it again.
Homeowner Brian Berry was surprised when one of his kids came into the house and told him there was a bear outside eating the tomatoes from their garden. The entire family were indeed delighted; they named him “Bear Bryant,” and this guy has made quite a name for himself.

For three days Bear Bryant stayed at the Berry home; hey why not – there was a lot to eat and no one was bothering him. Imagine the luck of this bear?
Brian is excited to watch the bear filling up on food, even if it all has come from his own garden:

i’m not upset about it. I’ve enjoye watching him enjoy himself and him being skinny lie he was. I figure he’s traveling wherever he is traveling, and he needs a good bit of groceries.
Bears are often seen in North Alabama, and the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries division urges homeowners to leave the bears alone and do not try to harass, hurt or interact with them. A bear matching Bear Bryant’s description had previously been seen in Mississippi. Maybe he’s just passing through?

It’s obviously not so bad sharing our food with the bears, but humans are asked NOT to feed them. Let the bears find their own food, and leave them alone.
The family was ultimately thrilled to have experienced such an encounter.
