A woman from Cary, North Carolina has been charged with animal cruelty after a neglected, six-month-old Great Dane puppy was removed from her care.

According to the Cary Police Department’s public statement, Claudia Delacerda, 35, was arrested and charged on November 19. The Great Dane, named Teagan, should weigh between 45 and 50 pounds; when rescued she only weighed 26 pounds. It had been a neighbor who posted on the NextDoor app about the dog’s condition, alerting authorities to investigate.
Rescue group, Perfectly Imperfect Pups, is caring for Teagan, and according to Nicole Kincaid, the founder of the rescue group, the puppy has had to endure unimaginable suffering by having been starved – possibly for months. After Teagan arrived at the rescue, she suffered from breathing problems and refused to eat. At that time, her prognosis was guarded.
Teagan suffered a tear in her diaphragm and was rushed to the North Carolina State Vet Emergency Hospital where she underwent surgery; she would not have survived another day or two had the problem been left untreated. As of November 25, Teagan has been eating and receiving medications orally.

Teagan has been progressing, and there are lots of people smiling.

She went from having almost no one on her side to lots of people rooting for her and sending her lots of love. It makes my heart sing so much. Perfectly Imperfect Pups.
