It had been on Christmas Eve that an unwanted puppy for someone had been abandoned on the side of the Los Angeles freeway. It had only been by a stroke of good fortune that a kind citizen spotted the frightened puppy cowering in the tall grass and contacted a friend from Westside German Shepherd Rescue of Los Angeles for help.

The woman had seen someone pull over to the side of the road, dump a box and then drive off. It didn’t take long to recognize the tiny puppy running around and completely confused in the strange environment.

Of course, it’s impossible to know if the puppy, since dubbed Finley, had been a Christmas present “gone wrong” but considering the time of year and tons of experience, the staff from the rescue were pretty sure the puppy had not been a planned family member and because of human error, had become a statistic – another unwanted puppy because someone had not thought the idea of being a responsible pet parent through!

Every year more than 6.3 million pets enter shelters in the United States and 2023 numbers were higher than the previous year. And even more tragic – nearly one-million abandoned pets are euthanized every year.

Sooooo… how about an update? We always appreciate good news, and what could be better than this?

This past week, 10 dogs were adopted. Congratulations to all the new families!

The lucky dogs were:

Finley, Autumn, Leonardo (adopted by his foster family), Polar (moving to CO), Camila, Oslo, Hawthorn (moving to OR), Zach, Noel and Cassie.
