Songwriter Lily Allen slammed for dumping her adopted dog back at shelter after she claimed it ‘ruined’ her life

Singer and actress Lily Allen, 39, shared on her podcast “Miss Me?” on Thursday that her shelter dog, Mary, she adopted during the Covid pandemic and now returned to the shelter, “ruined her life” after the dog ate the family’s passports.

On her August 22 episode of her podcast, Allen, told her cohost she plans to adopt a Chihuahua soon, and added that she and her two daughters – Ethel and Marnie, have already picked the name of Jude Bellingham for their new pooch.

But wait! The question was raised about being responsible for a dog which includes more than just feeding them and posting their photos on Instagram. Allen and her husband David Harbour had already adopted Mary, but she was returned to the shelter!

Here’s why – according to Allen. It couldn’t be because the passports weren’t left in a safe place. It couldn’t be because the dog was never trained. It couldn’t be because Allen blames a tiny dog for not knowing any better?

“but then it ate my passport and so I took her back to the home. She ate all 3 of our passports, and they had our visas in there. And i cannot tell you how much money it cost me to get everything replaced because it was in covid. And so it was just an absolute logistical nightmare.”

The children’s father. Sam Cooper, lives in England, and the girls couldn’t travel because as she said,

because the f…ing dog had eaten the passports.

She added that she thought the dog had been “badly behaved,” and “it just didn’t work out.” Yet we all want to know – why couldn’t their father fly to the U.S. to see his daughters?

And while blaming the innocent pup for its bad manners, Allen had more to add. Sam Cooper didn’t allow the girls to take her current husband’s last name of Harbour, so that made the singer resent the dog more, according to her own words.

Social media certainly voiced their opinions. Although some people laughed at the situation, the seriousness hit animal lovers hard. We all know how much more difficult it is to find a home for a dog that has been returned to the shelter. Too often, surrendered dogs are immediately euthanized because shelters are so overcrowded.

In addition, dogs don’t behave badly – they aren’t taught how to misbehave. They just have never been taught!

Other responses included:

this is a sad listen. Shame on you Lily Allen. Shame

We hope Mary finds a good home with a family who actually care enough about her to help her become the best canine citizen she can be.

  1. For your children’s sake, I certainly hope they NEVER misbehave! Pets are family, you are responsible for them! This is a reflection on you and your own carelessness!
Please do NOT adopt any other animals.
    Good riddance!!
