In Longview, Texas, a stray mother cat and her four newborn kittens are clean and safe after having a unique start to life a few days ago.

According to the Longview Animal Care & Adoption Center, the four kittens were rushed to the organization after their mother, named Georgia O’Keeffe, dropped them into a bucket of wet black paint.

The shelter’s post on their Facebook page stated:

Like her legendary namesake, she is a visionary. However, we think she took the ‘creative medium’ a little too literally this week. Georgia recently gave birth to four beautiful kittens. But instead of a boring old blanket for her first exhibition, she proudly nestled her newborns right into an open can of wet paint.
Staff and volunteers spent several hours cleaning the paint off the kittens. The mother has since been reunited with her litter, and the entire family is reported to be doing fine.

The kittens are too young to be listed for adoption yet, but when ready, surely they will have a story to tell.
