Malta is an archipelago in the Central Mediterranean Sea, and as beautiful as the countryside is, animal cruelty and abandonment still persists. It was in a valley on the Chadwick Lakes Trail that a bonded young dog and a rabbit were found curled up together comforting each other on Wednesday.

According to the rescue group, Malta Ranger Unit, the unlikely pair – the white rabbit and the one-year-old fox terrier, were rescued after a Good Samaritan spotted the two and alerted rangers who were able to find the pair within 30 minutes and transport them to safety.

The report suggested they had likely been dumped together as they were found huddled close and seemed withdrawn Both received veterinary care; the terrier for an ear infection and parasites, and the rabbit for mange, fleas and maggots.

Most heartwarming of all, these two furry friends haven’t left each other’s side since the rescue. The hope is that they can be adopted together into a loving forever home.

Our Ranger together with Althea Galea from Vuci ghall-Annimali responded to the sighting of abandoned pets within minutes. In less than 30 min from seen, they were in safe hands.

Abandoning a pet is a crime. Please be a responsible pet owner! A reminder that it is also by law to chip your dog and attach an ID tag on its collar. These two were seemingly dumped together, since they took shelter together and were in a state of shock.

NGO collaborations is the way forward! Thank you Althea and all other dedicated animal activists for the work you carry out.
