Claire Hughes is from Hamilton, Ontario and is a huge supporter of animal rescue. She adopted her dog Dolly from Fetch + Release, and had followed her best furry friend’s history. Dolly, 11, a Catahoula leopard dog and beagle mix, had given birth to six puppies, and while at the shelter, all of the puppies had been adopted.

It wasn’t until a few years later, however that Hughes discovered one of Dolly’s puppies, Cheddar, had been returned to the shelter, and since that time had been there for two years unable to find a home. Cheddar had lived in Tennessee for seven years before moving to Canada in 2021, and after that, lived at the shelter.

Cheddar’s adoption information:

Cheddar / M / 9Y / 72 lbs / Catahoula / Needs Respectful Intros / Good with Balanced Dogs / Ok with Dog-Savvy Cats / Untested with Kids / Prefers Suburbs or Quiet Country / From Tennessee / Fostered in Mississauga

Meet Cheddar! This handsome fella is full of silly quirks. Though timid at first, once he trusts you, you’ll be let into his world of tap dancing, his helicopter tail and cuddles (on his terms). Once his foster mom greets him good morning, he is wide awake and will greet her back by bringing her his blankie and sometimes throwing his bed into the air, excited to start the day.

In one line, this was Cheddar’s description:

It had been the description of Cheddar that convinced Claire to adopt Dolly’s son. According to Newsweek, Cheddar arrived at their home, and there seemed to have been an immediate bond between the two dogs. Why not adopt Dolly’s son, Claire thought; she has plenty of room for two dogs and she and her husband work from home.

And in just a week the dogs settled in together, and now even Norman the cat, has started to form a friendship. On occasion the three even nap together.

It was on October 31, that Claire shared the delightful story on Reddit; accompanied by adorable photos which generated lots of upvotes and expressions of love. She hopes that happy stories like this will generate more interest in rescuing pets from shelters.
