In Picayune, Mississippi, the owner of the Erin Regan Animal Sanctuary rescued an unwanted puppy mid-way through the euthanasia procedure at a nearby shelter late last month.

The puppy, now named Nikki, had already been administered acetyl promazine, a sedative and antiemetic to relax the dog before being administered pentobarbital to stop her heart. Tracy Bulino, the owner of the rescue, had been notified about the hound dog’s soon to be sad fate, by one of the shelter employees who asked her if she could help this sweet dog.

At the time, Bulino was asked to help, she knew nothing about the dog – age, size, breed or personality, except the shelter worker had campaigned hard to save Nikki’s life. The dog had been dropped off at the shelter by someone who was told if they surrendered the 10-month-old puppy, she would have to be euthanized because of the lack of space.

According to Newsweek, Bulino arrived after Nikki had been sedated and carried the young dog out to her vehicle because the dog kept falling over. What was especially sad was the shelter had asked the person dropping off Nikki to take her home and try to find a home for her; a sweet, friendly puppy didn’t deserve to die because there was no room at the shelter. Sadly, Nikki was left at the shelter, and the person never turned around with even a second thought about the puppy’s fate.

And while Tracy had been rescuing Nikki, another dog Floyd had been slated to die the next day because of dermatitis, and he went home also.

The sanctuary currently is home for 82 animals with a significant number of farm animals who will live there for the rest of their lives. Nikki, however is one of the residents, who will be available for adoption soon.

Check out the video on TikTok. It’s definitely a reason to smile:

We need to put in more kennels. Please help!! Our local shelter is having to euthanize beautiful animals daily. They don’t deserve this. We have the space, so let’s do this! Let’s save lives together! #savetheanimals #dogrescue #adoptdontshop #theanimalsneedusnow #taylorswift #foryoupage
