In Penneville, New York, the staff at the Friends Forever Animal Rescue were in tears as they watched the expression of a surrendered dog staring at his owners as they casually drove away. Sophia, a 14-year-old golden retriever, was brought into the shelter on Monday – the excuse for dumping their dog -“they were moving” and they didn’t have time to care for her anymore.

This is the face of a 14 year old dog who just lost her home because they were moving. they brought her to the facility today. She is confused and wondering where her people are and where she is going. How do i tell her she is safe? How do i make her understand she didn’t do anything wrong?

And now it would be the rescue organization who would be the ones to love her, to care for her and to make her feel secure and wanted for the rest of her life.

She may not understand it now, but in the end when it really matters she will feel love and me holding her paw and kissing her head telling her that she is a good girl and she was very loved by me and will be missed because I refused to give up on her. I refuse to give up on any of them! When you toss away your pets they end up in the hands of strangers who love them instantly.

Unfortunately, the look on Sophia’s face is no longer the exception. Too many times the staff have been broken down to tears watching the dogs left behind, unable to comprehend the abandonment they suddenly feel.

Perhaps the saddest part of Monday’s surrender, after watching Sophia look longingly at her humans just driving away, had to have been her owner’s indifference as they walked her in and told the staff this was the last place they had tried to surrender her. On the team’s Facebook page, the comments were fierce; – the anger over Sophia’s surrender as well as the anger over such little concern about their poor dog’s feelings.

Sometimes, however charm just moves in and for Sophia, the magic lit up her life.

  1. I don’t get it? How people can be so cruel as to dump a 14 y/o pet of any kind. But maybe they just couldn’t afford vet bills and were to embarrassed to admit it. The thing is that really gets me is @14 that dog will never forget them like a puppy would. I rescued my Sadie after her mom of 10 years died and then my mom adopted her and died 3 weeks later. Every now and then she’ll sit by door staring into space and I know she wanting her original momma to come get her. If she wanted out she can use 2 doggie doors.
I’m glad a vet took her home.
