Once starved and neglected, blind and deaf Great Dane made awesome recovery but still needs a home

Her name is Angel, and according to the kind folks at Northwest Florida Great Dane Rescue who helped her recover from a cruel and neglected life, her name reflects her disposition. The seven year old double merle, female Great Dane is blind and deaf, but copes with her challenges like a champ; now she needs a home to call her own.

Angel arrived at the rescue from a property where numerous dogs had to be confiscated. Angel had been starved, weighed less than 60 pounds upon arrival and had been riddled with infections and parasites. She was heartworm positive. During the last two months, she has been slowly gaining weight, her infections have cleared up, and she is currently being treated for heartworms.

She’s now fully vaccinated and spayed, and she’s on antibiotics that will come with her to her adoptive home. Angel has been through tough times, but remains trusting and sweet. Her charming personality would do great in a home with another calm dog who could help her.

Currently, Angel shares her foster home with one adult, four dogs, a bunny and three chickens in the backyard; she doesn’t really pay attention to the backyard critters. She loves to go on walks, however there is no other favorite pastime for this 60+pound gal than to snuggle up with her foster brother.

While Angel is not able to see or hear, her nose and keen sense of smell leads the way for her. She carefully sniffs around the house and yard. She is house-trained and prefers a routine (as most dogs do). She has a very laid back personality, walks well on a leash and uses a Martingale collar after she becomes familiar with her surroundings. A shoulder harness is preferred.

As to maneuvering around, Angel needs to know her “person” is close by, and to help her find her way safely and not bump into obstacles, she depends on her person to help from taps on her shoulder telling her which way to turn.

Angel has her own kennel which she deems as HER space and along with a soft blanket and a tempting treat awaiting her, she settles in for a nap quickly.

She does fine with older kids, and due to her laid back nature, her rescuers think she’d do fine with younger kids as well; as long as they understand she can’t see them!
