At the East Valley Shelter in Van Nuys, California, the Fourth of July weekend brings the longest residents at the shelter in danger of losing their lives to make room for the influx of animals that will be entering the shelter. Tragically, dogs are being euthanized for the lack of space.

Meet Jojo – this beautiful husky blend with the bluest eyes has been at the shelter for 508 days. No doubt, she is one of the shelter’s longest residents, and she’s so sweet, yet no one has applied to adopt her. She was an owner surrender from February 2022; her family didn’t give a reason.

Volunteers and shelter staff believe Jojo had been purchased as a beautiful, fluffy puppy with gorgeous blue eyes, and when she grew up and reached 71 pounds, her family didn’t know what to do with her, nor did they give her the guidance or the training she needed. Maybe as Jojo grew up, she just wasn’t as adorable as she was as a puppy?

That was 10 years ago, and when she became more of a burden to her family because of their lack of patience, time or responsibility, she was merely dropped off at the nearest shelter; her family never turned around to say goodbye.

no matter how hard the volunteers work to enrich their lives like teaching Jojo how to fetch and shake, is dull and monotonous. It’s just GREY. And Jojo who was spayed at the shelter and never had any veterinary care in her prior life doesn’t like other dogs, or at least in a shelter environment, so that is a major hindrance. Perhaps she should go to a trainer to learn decompression or be an only dog. Can you imagine how hard this is going to be?

Jojo is one of the brightest dog breeds, but she is a dog who needs a lot of mental and physical stimulation. Sadly, at the shelter she is wasting away with barely any social media presence.

  1. Too bad she has to be an “only dog”….. that negatively impacts her ability to be adopted. I have 7 rescues and they all get along (dogs and horses)….. I would be interested in giving Jojo a home but if she doesn’t like to be with other dogs, it won’t work😢😢😢
