A 25-year-old Westmoreland County, PA, woman is facing charges after she allegedly went on vacation, leaving one of her dogs crated in the basement of her home, without care. According to WTAE News, the dog, named Dallas, died.

Destiny Witherspoon is accused of obtaining care for two of her pets, but leaving Dallas crated in the basement of her home while she was away for days. The heartbreaking situation was discovered because one of Witherspoon’s acquaintances was concerned that two of her pets were being cared for, but Dallas wasn’t. The pit bull was found dead in his cage.

A veterinarian determined that Dallas had died from dehydration and found that he had no food in his digestive system. The dog was in a basement that was filled with so much trash that the fire department was called in to help remove the body.

Zoe Kirkwood, a neighbor, told the news agency:

“Why would you take two to a sitter and not the third one? It’s not understandable at all. You shouldn’t have pets if you can’t take care of all of them. That’s unsafe, unsanitary and just cruel.”

Witherspoon was jailed on two counts of aggravated animal cruelty; she faces a preliminary hearing on Aug. 17.
