Upwards of 140 black bears will be killed in order to replace fur hats worn by members of the Queen’s guard reports the Mirror UK. A petition with thousands of signatures failed to sway the Ministry of Defense (MOD) from plans to use bear fur for the ceremonial hats. Decision-makers rejected calls for faux fur, citing bear fur’s ability to repel water.
Defense Equipment minister Jeremy Quin said: “In addition to passing initial laboratory tests, any new fabric would have to gain user approval for shape and comfort.”
The fur is acquired from bears killed in Canada – the MOD claims that the bears are part of a licensed cull, but PETA has stated that they have found no evidence that there are any Canadian licensed bear culls. A PETA petition states that “there are no restrictions on shooting mother bears who have nursing cubs, which leads to the eradication of entire families, as the cubs are orphaned and left to die.”
The petition outlines a viable alternative, stating:
PETA U.K. and luxury faux furrier ECOPEL have created the world’s first faux bear fur that is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. ECOPEL has even offered to supply the MoD with unlimited, free faux bear fur until 2030.

ARE THEY “STUPID” OR JUST PLAIN “INSANE”!
This is a horrible loss of a beloved creature of our world. I think it’s time to use unreal fur or stop this practice.
