A horse is alive thanks to a skilled team of rescuers with North Whidbey Fire and Rescue in Washington state. According to the fire and rescue agency, the horse fell into an abandoned well near Highway 20 earlier this week.

Images reveal the daunting situation facing the rescue team – the horse, named Blaze, was at the bottom of the 15-foot deep well with no way to escape. “It’s not something we do every day,” North Whidbey Fire & Rescue Chief John Clark tells King 5 News, “Usually we get people out of places, not horses.”

A neighbor with an excavator was able to help the technical rescue team hoist the horse out of the well. Miraculously, the horse slipped in tail first – otherwise, he would have likely snapped his neck during the fall.

Despite the sizeable drop, the horse sustained minor injuries and was standing just after being lifted to safety.

In a Facebook post, North Whidbey Fire and Rescue thanked those involved in the rescue effort:

With the help of Dr. Hanson, and Kelly Short (Island County Roads), the rescue team was able to successfully rescue the horse. The horse is doing well thanks to this extraordinary team effort.
