In Indianapolis, four people have been charged in the torturous death of a dog that had been stabbed and suffocated. The dog, named Deron, had just been adopted from the Indiana Animal Care Services on July 28, and he was brutally killed on August 6 at a home on the city’s east side.

According to Fox News, Zech Thomsen, 19, and Sierra Makin, 20, were arrested for their alleged roles in the horrific animal abuse. On Thursday, after official charges were filed by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, two more warrants were issued for the arrest of 21-year-old Clifford Massey and 66-year-old Denita Hughes for their involvement in the dog’s death.

Ring doorbell video showed both Massey and Thomsen yelling at the dog. Thomsen then could be heard asking for a knife. Witnesses called 911 and told police they had seen a man holding a knife while a dog had been hanging from the front porch by his leash. The witness stated he saw the man stab the dog and then wrapped the dog’s head in a trash bag to suffocate him. Three people were allegedly watching as the man stabbed, suffocated and tortured the dog. When witnesses approached, another man told them to mind their own business.

When authorities arrived, Massey allegedly said he knew nothing about what had happened to Deron.

Deron was only two-years-old, and the staff described him as an “energetic, affectionate guy” who gave the “best kisses.”

The suspects are facing charges ranging from torturing or mutilating an animal, battery with bodily injury to a public safety officer and obstruction of justice. Donitra Hughes is facing obstruction of justice – a level 6 felony.

We are heartbroken over this situation and we are supporting IMPD with their investigation. Our staff and volunteers are truly invested in the care and well-being of all of our animals. It is always our goal that when animals are adopted they go to loving forever homes. Prior to any animal leaving our building, staff checks each adopter or foster to see if they have a history of animal related violations. The party (or parties) involved in this situation did not have a history with ACS

Another dog named King is still missing. That dog was also adopted by Massey at the same time as Deron. At this time King is missing. If anyone knows where this dog is, please call CrimeStoppers at 317.262.TIPS.

Rest in peace Deron. We are so sorry that humans failed you.
