A veterinarian in Alma, Georgia, euthanized seven adult dogs and 21 puppies, who were seized from a home in Nicholls. According to multiple sources, the dogs belonged to 64-year-old Carol Dukes, who is facing eight counts of animal cruelty.

Police who responded to Dukes’ residence on July 11 found an open door at a residence on the 600 block of Alma Avenue. Officers observed adult dogs covered in fleas, missing hair, and bleeding. Some puppies were deceased and being eaten by starving adult dogs. A report about the incident details the deplorable conditions:

“The dogs had started eating the deceased puppies, so I called 911 to get help for the poor animals. I’m sorry they had to be put down, but it was unreal the living and health conditions. Their skin would tear apart and bleed from the skin infections they all had. The number of fleas on each dog was ungodly, and the puppies couldn’t even open their eyes due to the fleas, and the puppies had signs of skin infection already.”

All of the dogs were taken to an Alma veterinarian who determined that they needed to be euthanized.

As reported by Douglas Now, Dukes was in jail at the time that the police went to her home. She has been there for several days on felony drug charges.

  1. I cannot believe none could be saved! I’ve seen dogs with half their faces missing and so crusted up with mange they looked like stone and they were saved! This vet just didn’t care! She didn’t want to save them that would mean she would have to work. Shame on this lazy vet!

  2. I agree with you. The vet didn’t want to be bothered trying to heal the skin issues. Skin issues may look awful, but with the “right” medications and medicated baths, they heal pretty quickly (as compared with broken bones or burns)…,….

I know there are rescues all over. It would have been great to have contacted them for help. Many groups could have taken a few dogs each, healed them and adopted them out, Total disregard for life from this vet disgusts me……..

  3. Shame on the Vet for just sealing the case and putting all the animals down. These puppies could be been saved by volunteer organisations. There has been far worse cases of shocking skin conditions and with long term treatment, care and love the animals have flourished and turned in beautiful, healthy dogs. A lazy Vet who just couldn’t be bothered. Far easier to just kill all the animals.
