A family in Dickerson, Maryland, accidentally burned their own house down while trying to rid the structure of a snake infestation. As reported by WJLA News, things went awry on November 23 when the homeowner tried to use coals to “smoke out” unwanted snakes from their home.

The coals were too close to something combustible and the basement was the first part of the house that went up in smoke…well, make that flames. When all was said and done, the entire house caught fire causing a million dollars in damage. Seventy-five firefighters responded to the blaze, but nothing could be done to save the home.

No word on what happened to the snakes that inspired the unusual eradication efforts.
