In York, Pennsylvania, the man who shot and killed his neighbor’s Maltipoo pleaded guilty on Wednesday to animal cruelty. Richard Heikes, 42, was sentenced to 11 1/2 to 23 months in the York County Prison.

According to the York Daily Record, Heikes told the court the dog had been running around his mobile home and had already bitten several people on June 5, 2020. Heikes said he was afraid the dog would bite a six-year-old family member and shot the dog with a pellet gun – allegedly to scare the dog away.

Heikes stated the shot had richocheted off the blacktop and hit the dog; he heard the dog cry out and then run away.

The Maltipoo named Atlas died the next day while officers were at the home of  Atlas’ owner, Angelique Lane. She told authorities her dog came  home crying in pain with a “bloody hole in his body.”

Rest in peace Atlas.
