At the animal shelter in Greenville, South Carolina, an unknown person threw a small dog over a four-foot fence into the play yard of the shelter on Saturday night after the shelter closed. When the staff discovered her presence early the next morning and came out to bring her inside, they were shocked at the open wounds on her back. Is that why she was tossed away like trash?

She has been named Coco, and at the request of the shelter was saved by Rescue Dogs Rock NYC on Sunday morning.

Despite the deep wounds and the intense pain she endured, Coco remained very sweet. She spent 24 hours at the emergency veterinarian hospital to get stabilized and then was transferred on Tuesday to the organization’s primary veterinarian in Georgia. She is scheduled to undergo surgery to clean and debride the massive wounds on her back. Her medical team believes she was burned and never treated, causing the wounds to expand and become infected.

An update posted:

“Coco (SC) is at the ER vet overnight receiving IV fluids, antibiotics and pain medication. The ER vet estimate for her overnight stay and care is $400 to $500 dollars. IN ADDITION: She is going to require surgical debridement and wound care, laser therapy and possibly physical therapy. She is heartworm positive. Luckily they did not find any broken bones. Their best guess is that this is from untreated burns! These wounds got this bad because these injuries are not new, and they weren’t being treated… it was preventable!!, the group posted on their Facebook page.
