Dozens of puppies arrive deceased from Ukraine to Toronto

In Toronto, dozens of puppies arrived dead as Ukraine International Airlines unloaded its cargo at the Toronto Pearson Airport over the weekend. The flight landed on June 13 carrying 500 puppies according to a statement from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on Friday.

The news source, The Star, reports the puppies suffered from dehydration, weakness and/or vomiting and 38 were found dead. An investigation is ongoing.

“The humane transport of animals is a requirement under the Health of Animals Regulations: Part XII, which state that carriers cannot load, transport or unload animals in a way that would cause injury or undue suffering.”

On their Facebook page, the Ukranine International Airlines expressed their sorrow in the deaths of the puppies.

Everyone at UIA offers its condolences for the tragic loss of animal life on our flight. UIA is working with local authorities to determine what happened and to make any changes necessary to prevent such a situation from occurring again.

According to the National Post, a source reported there were 200 French bulldogs in cages – some cages with two dogs each. The temperatures at the time of loading was over 86 degrees Fahrenheit, and the puppies had been visibly suffering as crates were placed on top of each other – some wrapped in plastic. A handler reported the dogs had been placed in cages without the ability to move and with poor air circulation. The pallets with the puppies had been transported in the lower compartment of the aircraft where air circulation is poor.

The puppies were to be sold in Toronto pet stores.

You idiots! Brachycephalic (flat-faced) dogs need cool, circulated air at all times in order to breathe. And who was the genius that wrapped crates in plastic! Not only that, but 87 degrees is too hot to be shipping these dogs in anyway.
