In Edinburg, Virginia, a Chow Chow named Chewbacca (aka Chewby) had been at the Shenandoah County Animal Shelter for nearly six months as a seizure case before legal custody was finally awarded to the shelter.
“…Chewby and the other 4 dogs and 2 cats that she came in with. Chewby and the other animals brought to us were all living in Jeep filled with trash. She had a really hard time adjusting to the shelter and just recently we have made ‘friends’ with her…”
For our Chow Chow supporters and lovers, Chewby loves to go for walks and loves to go outside to watch the world go by. Although she doesn’t seem to be a dog who likes to be cuddled, she does enjoy head and butt scratches. Surely Chewby had been neglected – when she arrived she was terribly matted and wouldn’t allow anyone to get too close to her to even remove her matting.
“Since we have become ‘friends’ we were able to muzzle her, very quickly and with a smart hand (lol), and remove some of the mats. She doesn’t have a beautiful coat yet and she still does have a small amount of matting but nothing like she did,” the animal shelter posted on
In the last month, Chewby has made great strides – a dog who would growl when anyone would walk by her shelter cage to a dog who loves to go for walks to the mail box.
Chewby is a senior who needs a special friend to help her – she deserves more than what she had in her previous life and of course, can’t stay at the shelter forever.
