The rescue community is reeling today following the discovery of a well-known animal welfare advocate and rescuer who was found dead in the bed of his Philadelphia home on Tuesday morning. According to multiple news agencies, Al Chernoff was found tied to a bed, with a massive head wound and slashes on his chest.
The 59-year-old man was found after a neighbor reported hearing screams from inside of a house on the 8400 block of Algon Avenue in the early morning hours – as reported by CBS Philadelphia, Chernoff was pronounced dead at the scene.
The authorities are searching for the suspect; a woman who was seen leaving the home before the police arrived.
Animal control officers have been removing pets that Chernoff was caring for from his home.

Words escape me at times like this. The animal rescue community, and especially the cat community has lost an amazing man. He was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met and he would do anything for anyone. You are already missed and there is a hole in the heart of every cat rescuer that will never be filled.
Rest in Peace Al Chernoff. May you be surrounded by your feline friends at the rainbow bridge and may you find peace.
Words of shock, grief and dismay have been pouring into Chernoff’s personal Facebook page. Those acquainted with Chernoff are in disbelief that he was taken from this world in such an unexpected and violent manner.
