Six dogs found dead and nine others starving in Phoenix home

In Phoenix, Arizona, authorities made a grizzly discovery late Sunday night when they discovered six dead dogs and nine others suffering from malnutrition.

According to AzFamilyNews, police had been patrolling a residential area near Van Buren Street when they smelled a strong odor originally believed to have been a decomposing body. When officers checked the home, they spotted a dead dog lying in the middle of the living room.

The homeowner Blanche Lopez, 61, had not been home for days and when contacted returned home to meet the police. Six dead dogs had been left in the home, and the nine surviving dogs appeared to have been starving. The home was covered with urine, feces, blood and maggots. The dead dogs’ bodies had been in various stages of decomposition.

Two of the surviving dogs remain in critical condition. The other six dogs are suffering from skin allergies and hair loss; their blood tests are still pending results, however they are very fearful and nervous; ages range from a 10-week-old puppy to four years of age. The dogs are Labrador retriever, German shepherd and Shar-pei mixes. They are being treated at the Arizona Humane Society.

Lopez has been charged with 15 counts of animal cruelty.
