Police body cam video released of dog shot in his own yard

In Vernon, New Jersey, a police officer shot and killed a dog outside of his home on Saturday. The Labrador retriever, a former rescue pooch named Hiro, had escaped from his yard when an officer came to capture the pet tragically ending in the dog’s death.

According to the Buddha Dog Rescue & Recovery Facebook page, Vernon Police Department released the body cam footage of the disturbing incident. Hiro initially ran out of his yard to chase a passing vehicle. The officer, with his gun drawn, yells to the dog “HEY” which immediately brings Hiro’s attention to the stranger.

As the dog’s face is clearly in view, Hiro runs towards the officer barking, but he was not “foaming at the mouth, limping, showing teeth or lunging” as the officer stated. Questions as to why the officer couldn’t use pepper spray to stave off the dog’s approach remain unanswered.

“I would also like to point out that Officer Rivera clearly states regarding animal control, ‘they’re not gonna come on unless we have the dog.’ If officers are going to be dispatched to loose/aggressive dog calls, they need to be properly trained on how to handle and diffuse the situation and be equipped with the proper nonlethal tools to subdue a dog,” the rescue organization posted on Monday afternoon.

Everyone agrees Hiro shouldn’t have been loose in the streets, but neither should the officer had to have shot and killed the dog. Changes need to be made; this situation could have been handled differently and Hiro could still be alive.

Body cam proves what we thought all along, this police officer is a gun toting idiot! I’m wondering why the neighbors needed to call the police in the first place, didn’t they know who owned this dog? I hope they are all happy for getting this poor pup killed!

“BACK UP!” What the hell did this guy think the dog was just gonna throw it in reverse 😡 I think they just give any idiot who applies a Glock, badge and keys to a charger and turn them loose . Amazing how many of this big, badass cocky wannabe men act like little girls if a dog comes up to them.
