In Adams County, Mississippi, a man was found guilty on Thursday of felony dog fighting. Tommie Queen had been accused of nine counts of dog fighting; a jury found him guilty on three counts.

According to the Clarion Ledger, Queen was arrested in 2017 during one of the largest animal abuse cases in the state. After an extensive investigation authorities seized 54 dogs. When authorities arrived at the home after a report about dog fighting, a black pit bull was first discovered chained in the front yard. As sheriff deputies walked into the backyard, they were shocked finding many more dogs – some missing limbs, starving and bleeding from recent injuries.

In addition, police found 12 to 15 pound chains, medical supplies used to enhance a dog’s strength and photos of nine of the 54 dogs injured while engaged in fights. Some of the dogs had to be humanely euthanized because of their horrendous injuries.

Queen’s conviction comes shortly after the state’s new felony dogfighting law.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals along with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the Natchez Adams County Humane Society helped the surviving dogs. Many of the dogs have since been adopted.
