A Belgian Malinois is being hailed as a hero and is recovering after chasing through the tunnel which led to the death of one of the world’s most wanted terrorist leaders. A report on Monday describes the dog’s important role in the al-Baghadadi raid.
According to AbcNews, General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated the dog performed a “tremendous service” in the operation that targeted Islami State found Baghdadi. The dog was reported to have been injured by electrocution in the mission, but is expected to make a full recovery.
“The dog is still in theater, returning to duty with its handlers,” Milley said.
The dog is believed to have been sent down the tunnel, after rumors circulated that Baghdadi had been wearing a suicide vest; he detonated it killing himself and three young children. The dog is part of the Army Delta force which executed the raid.
The dog’s name and his handler have not yet been identified.
Ironically, during the raid that led to the death of Osama bin Laden, a Belgian Malinois named Cairo assisted in that raid. He helped to secure the area around the compound while Navy SEALs entered.
