In New York, animal rights supporters are shaking their heads in disappointment after a cruel man who hurled a small dog to its death from a New York City apartment balcony was sentenced to just 45 days in jail.
According to the New York Times, Yuk Cheung, 35, had been having an argument with his ex-girlfriend about the 12-year-old pug named Yoda when he threw the dog out of a seventh-floor balcony in March. Prosecutors stated Cheung claimed the dog wiggled out of his arms, but investigators determined Yoda had been thrown. He then went down to the street, picked up Yoda’s lifeless body, put it in a box with ice and dumped it in a trash can.
“During an argument with a former girlfriend, the defendant lashed out at a defenseless dog,” Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said. “The little pug was viciously thrown from a balcony and plunged seven stories to her death. As a result of this act of aggression and cruelty, the defendant is going to jail.”
Mr. Brown stated Yoda had been propelled 40 feet up into the air to clear a rooftop directly below the balcony and to then land on the street below six feet from the sidewalk.
In addition to the 45-days in jail, Cheung will not be allowed to own any animals for the next five years and must register with the city as an animal abuser. The animal abuser registration prevents city shelters, rescue groups and pet stores from allowing individuals convicted of an animal abuse crime to purchase or adopt a pet.
